Ayla Bosman: ‘Interim work makes the first steps of your
career a lot more dynamic’
When Ayla Bosman (25) put a scribble under her degree in planning at the University of Amsterdam in early 2020, she could never have imagined that her very first job would be on an interim basis. But any regrets? Anything but. 'I can get a taste of many things and look at all kinds of organisations to discover what role suits me.'
Where does your fascination with planning come from?
Ayla: "That was sparked during a geography class in secondary school. The assignment was: follow a construction project in the area and write about it. I chose a road redevelopment project in my hometown and immediately found it extremely interesting. They placed the hedges on either side of the street closer together, which made the road appear narrower and made motorists drive slower. Result: less noise and less pollution. I found that so ingenious that I thought: I want to do something with that."
You graduated in early 2020. Did you start applying immediately?
"No, I first gave myself two months' holiday. During my days off, corona crept into our lives and I thought: this is not the time to start applying for jobs. I kept my side job as a hostess at Madurodam, but when the crisis just didn't end, I decided to look for something anyway."
Sent a lot of letters?
"Not one! I had received a lot of messages from recruiters on LinkedIn, so I went through them first. Among the pile was also a message from Gregory, relationship manager at Kinran. We made an appointment to get acquainted via Zoom and it clicked immediately. Kinran values collegiality, sociability and warmth among themselves. Exactly what I was looking for."
Interimwerk seemed like a good fit for you?
"Absolutely. It makes the first steps of your career a lot more dynamic. You can sample many things and look at all kinds of organisations to discover which role suits you. I think that's really the biggest advantage. There is also a lot of guidance from Kinran if you need it. And if a certain assignment is not quite my thing, I can tell Faik and Gregory and we will look for something else. I like having that freedom and being able to sample everything before making choices and committing to a client for a longer period of time."
What are your long-term ambitions?
"My long-term dream is to be project manager for larger projects within a municipality. A housing estate to be built, for example. As a starter and a planner, the dynamics of such a large project appeal to me enormously. A planologist is pre-eminently someone who connects all disciplines, interests and parties and creates order out of chaos. That suits me."
