Working on research for Amsterdam
The bureau for Onderzoek, Informatie en Statistiek (Research, Information and Statistics) is the research agency of the municipality of Amsterdam. We identify trends and then provide the information that is helpful in developing and evaluating policy. We produce numerous basic statistics and conduct policy research in areas such as housing, quality of life, population, employment, safety, education and infrastructure. We also conduct research in the areas of service provision, employee and customer satisfaction. We work largely for parts of the municipality of Amsterdam (political administration, city districts and services) and partly (10%) for other municipalities, provinces, universities, local media and companies in the region. We deploy our Data Collection Unit (DCU) for various types of data collection: telephone, written, face-to-face and online surveys.
Basic statistics
Traditionally, OIS has a lot of statistical information about Amsterdam. Our statistics describe a wide variety of topics, such as Amsterdam's population, housing stock, employment and activity in the city. Statistical information is also available on topics such as safety, elections, healthcare and education. Some examples:
Who lives in Amsterdam
Where do people live
How many Amsterdammers own a bicycle
How is the economy doing?
What will the city look like in 20 years
Many statistics have been kept for years. This makes it possible to track urban developments over time. Areas within the city, such as city districts and neighbourhood combinations, can also be compared.
Four important publications that appear every year are the Yearbook Amsterdam in Figures, City districts in Figures, Core Figures Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region in Figures. All data from these publications can be found on our website www.ois.amsterdam.nl.
Research and Statistics
OIS holds a lot of statistical information about Amsterdam. OIS statistics describe a wide variety of topics; from Amsterdam's population, housing stock, employment and activity in the city to topics such as safety, elections, healthcare and education. Because the statistics have been kept for years, it is possible to track urban developments over time. Areas within the city, such as city districts, neighbourhood combinations and neighbourhoods, can also be compared.
OIS also carries out (commissioned) research, ranging from short opinion polls on current topics to comprehensive monitors. OIS also does a lot of research in the field of service provision and customer satisfaction. The City of Amsterdam is our client for the most part; together with our internal cooperation partners, we draw up an annual research programme. OIS also conducts research for other municipalities, universities, provinces, the European Union, various local media and companies.
From data to information
Amsterdam has a large amount of data from and about the city: from registrations, files, research and other sources. One of the tasks for Amsterdam is to make better and smarter use of this data. OIS has an important task in this: we are responsible for opening up, linking and supplying this data. We do this as much as possible using innovative applications.
DataLab and DataPunt
The DataLab is a workshop, knowledge centre and partner for the municipality on data issues. Everything comes together here: (big) data, research and innovation. We work together with professionals and citizens and we use technology that connects applications and data. The working method of the DataLab is characterised by a project approach where usability and user-friendliness are central. The Datalab's main products are:
- operations, selections, retrieval and delivery of data;
- analyses, visualisations and research
- development of innovative applications such as apps and websites.
Here, the availability of internal and external data is an important prerequisite. We work together with Basisinformatie to make it centrally accessible to the various organisations in the city from DataPunt.
Research on assignment basis
Every year, we conduct several hundred surveys, ranging from short opinion polls on topical issues to comprehensive monitors. To collect the necessary research data, we use quantitative and qualitative research methods and desk research. Some examples of publications:
The Amsterdam Poverty Monitor
The State of the City of Amsterdam
The Amsterdam Citizen Monitor
The Liveability Index
Amsterdam Safety Index
Sports Monitor
Amsterdam Economic Clock
"This will make you an Amsterdammer"
About OIS
OIS employs around 45 staff and 100 surveyors. Our corporate culture is focused on development, promoting independence, stimulating and informal. OIS employs specialists in various fields of research.
