Master Students

Sarphati is the study association for the Bachelor's program Human Geography and Planning, as well as all Master's programs offered by the Department of Human Geography, Planning & International Development. On this page, you can find out what the study association can do for you as a Master's student.

Masters at Sarphati

'Sarphati is the study association for all programs that fall under the department of Human Geography, Planning & International Development (GPIO). In addition to the bachelor, these include the various tracks of the Master's programs in Human Geography, Urban & Regional Planning and International Development Studies, and the Research Master's programs in Urban Studies and International Development Studies. Students of the interdisciplinary Research Master's program in Social Sciences focusing on geography and planning are also very much welcome at Sarphati.
Activities

As a member of Sarphati, you are welcome to join all the activities we organise as a master's student! Educational or social, there is plenty for you as a Master's student to enjoy at Sarphati! We would also loveto see you at our weekly 'Borrel' (common Dutch word that does not have an English equivalent, but roughly means Get-together) on Wednesday. Finally, four times a year you will receive our beautiful magazine Den Uytvreter on your doormat.
Master Borrels & Mastercommissie

Besides the regular programme, Sarphati also organises activities especially for the Master's students as we understand very well that it might also be nice to be alone with your fellow students every once in a while :-). First of all, special 'Master Borrels' are occasionally organised on Thursdays instead of Wednesdays. In addition, the Mastercommissie (Master Committee) organises social and educational activities, also especially for Master's students. These activities and the Master Borrels alternate, to ensure that there is a moment for the Master's students among themselves at least once every month.

Career

But as mentioned, the rest of the association also has plenty going on for you as a Master's student! In particular, we would like to highlight the events organised by the Carrièrecommissie (Career Committee). They organise visits to companies and organisations active in the field of Human Geography and Planning, as well as the annual Netwerkborrel (Networking Borrel) and the annual Networking Event, which can help you as a Master's student to get a bit of a sniff at the beginning of your career. Also be sure to take a look at our Career page, where you will find more information on and vacancies with potential employees. And don't forget to follow us on LinkedIn, where relevant vacancies are posted regularly!
It is important to stress that many career opportunities in The Netherlands will have speaking Dutch as a requirement, as many Dutch companies and organisations in the field of Human Geography and Planning operate in Dutch.
Contact person & Social media

It goes without saying that the Sarphati board is always available to all members. For matters related to the Master's programs and Master students, it is best to contact the Commissaris Externe Zaken (Commissioner of External Affairs), who in addition to that task is also the internal contact for the Master's students. THeir e-mail address can be found below. And don't forget to follow us on social media to stay up to date on activities (Instagram) and career opportunities (LinkedIn)! If you also want access to our app, which we heartily recommend, please send an email to the Secretaris (Secretary).

Masters at GPIO (Human Geography, Planning & International Development)

Below are the first points of contact for you as a Master's student within the GPIO department. GPOI is the (Dutch) abbreviation used to refer to the Department for Human Geography, Planning & International Development at the UvA.
Study advisor

For all your questions that are not related to a particular subject, you can contact the study advisor. The study advisor for the Master's programs is Iris van Urk, who can be reached at the e-mail address below. You can also schedule an appointment with her via the UvA website, online or at the UvA. Should you have any questions about a particular course, it is best to ask the student assistant for that course. Who that is can be found in the Course Manual.

Program Committee

To safeguard the quality of education, there is the Opleidingscommissie (Program Committee). It consists of three lecturer-members and three student members who together discuss and research matters concerning the Master's programs. Would you like to raise something or do you think something could be improved? Then you can contact the student delegation. They have introduced themselves below. Please note, the Opleidingscommissie is not there to handle individual complaints, only to raise larger/broader issues.
